The Return of Spring

Spring Emerges

In defiance of difficult winters and world events.

Hints of green show through the dried brush,

Bright skies reflected in cerulean water,

Even as the mountains hold onto tinges of snow,

Spring Ensues.

I hope this finds you well into the positivity of Spring.  Living in a place where the snow hangs on until March, the first greens and bulbs of the season stand out with so much hope.  I’ve been writing short poems about this encouraging feeling of waking up from winter and posting them on instagram with my Emerging Spring series which is for sale at Wildwood Flower Emporium in Salmon Arm.  Wildwood has a beautiful selection of artist’s cards, original art, pottery, jewelry and other handmade gifts along with their incredible bouquets.

Meanwhile I’ve also been quietly working away in the studio this winter on several projects, and Spring marks the time for exhibiting and coming out in public again.  Here are a few important events coming up that you might be interested in.

Pollinators Exhibit

Honeybee Flight Paths IV, 24 x 24 mixed media

Sarah Hope, Leilani Ambrose, and myself are a part of this group exhibition at the Salmon Arm Arts Centre April 30 to July 2. The Pollinators is a multi-media exhibition exploring the importance of birds, bees, butterflies and bats as pollinators essential to life on earth. Fifteen artists plus a felted fibre collaborative will be featured in the exhibition.

Opening Celebration is Saturday April 30 from 11am-1pm.  Would love to see you there if you’re local and I’ll be sure to post a video to instagram if you’re not @sara.wiens

Open Studio Show & Sale

Lots of colour and work in progress going on here!

I’m opening my studio for a Spring show and sale Saturday May 7 and Sunday May 8 from 11-3 both days.  New work includes paintings on paper on the theme of honeybee flight paths.  There will be several artists showing work in the studio on this day including Jennifer Dodds.

Creative Workshops

Many of you have asked about the next workshops.  I’m planning two this Spring.

Workshops are $50 each. All supplies are provided.  Get a 20% discount for signing up for both if you are on my email list.

Connections Mixed Media workshop Saturday May 28 from 10am-1pm

Have you ever wondered what makes an abstract painting any good?

This workshop will focus on drawing and painting with freedom while participants also learn how to use the formal elements and principles of art in abstract work. We’ll also explore how abstract art can make connections to other parts of our lives.

and

Painting Excursions Outdoor workshop Saturday June 18 from 10-1

We’re taking to the trails for this one and learning about painting the landscape on location. Plein Air painting became popular with the French Impressionists who wanted to capture light and movement in the natural world.  Together we’ll learn about translating what we see and sense onto our canvas.

Newsletter subscribers will receive a 20% discount when they take both classes. Sign up at the bottom of this page if you’re interested in these and future events.

More details to come later this summer.

Thanks for supporting local artists.
